I hope you all are aware of Mid-Day Meal scheme. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Bengaluru, India. The organization strives to fight issues like hunger and malnutrition in India. By implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the government schools and government-aided schools, Akshaya Patra aims not only to fight hunger but also to bring children to school.

Akshaya Patra is continuously leveraging technology to cater to millions of children. Its state-of-the-art kitchens have become a subject of study and they attract curious visitors from around the world.

Today Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit run) mid-day meal program serving wholesome food to over 1.4 million children from 10,948 schools across 10 states in India.

Cost Per Meal Calculation

Ø  Cost per meal                                   : Rs. 7.40/Child/day

Ø  Government Subsidy                       : Rs 4.38/-

Ø  Cost incurred by Akshya Patra        : Rs 3.01

Ø  No. of Working days                         : 232 days

Ø  Rs 3.01 X 232 days = Rs 698.32 + 7.5 % ( Rs 52/- ) inflation (the general level of price going up) = Rs. 750/- per child / year

It takes Rs. 750 to feed a child for a year!

(Every donation of Rs. 500 or above to Akshaya Patra is eligible for 100% tax exemption under section 35 AC or 50% tax exemption under Section 80 G of the Indian Income Tax)
